*AI Magerezani is an initiative by MtaaLex Solutions aimed at training inmates in Kenyan prisons on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital tools. The goal is to equip them with legal research skills, digital literacy, and AI knowledge to enhance access to justice and prepare them for reintegration into society.

Many inmates, especially those incarcerated before AI and digital tools became mainstream, lack access to technological advancements. AI training can help them:

  • Learn how AI can be used in legal research and self-representation.
  • Acquire digital skills that enhance employability post-incarceration.
  • Understand their legal rights and access justice more efficiently.

We are currently piloting the program at Industrial Area Prison in Nairobi, with plans to expand to other correctional facilities across Kenya.

Inmates will:

  • Gain practical knowledge of AI and digital tools.
  • Learn how AI can assist in legal processes like case research and drafting pleadings.
  • Develop skills that can help them find job opportunities after their release.

For the initial training sessions, we will outsource equipment, including computers and internet access, to ensure effective learning. However, our long-term goal is to establish fully equipped computer labs in all prisons, enabling inmates to continuously access digital tools for legal research, AI training, and skill development.

The training is conducted by MtaaLex Solutions, experts in LegalTech, AI, and access to justice. We also collaborate with legal professionals, technologists, and correctional facility staff to deliver impactful sessions.

Lawyers and legal professionals can:

  • Volunteer to train inmates on legal research using AI.
  • Provide mentorship and legal guidance.
  • Support by donating educational materials or funding training sessions.

Interested volunteers can contact us via aimagerezani@mtaalexsolutions.co.ke or +254704020449.

Tech professionals can support the initiative by:

  • Training inmates on basic digital skills, AI concepts, and practical applications.
  • Developing AI-powered legal tools tailored for inmates’ access to justice.
  • Assisting in setting up computer labs and digital infrastructure in prisons.
  • Providing technical mentorship to help inmates understand AI’s impact on law and society.

If you’re a tech professional interested in volunteering, reach out to us at aimagerezani@mtaalexsolutions.co.ke or +254704020449.

Currently, the initiative is self-funded by MtaaLex Solutions, but we welcome partnerships, donations, and sponsorships from organizations and individuals who support access to justice and digital literacy.

Yes. By learning AI-assisted legal research, inmates can:

  • Draft better pleadings and legal documents.
  • Understand legal procedures and case precedents that may assist in their appeals.
  • Improve their ability to self-represent or engage legal aid services more effectively.

You can support by:

  • Donating learning materials (books, printed guides, or devices).
  • Sponsoring a training session or prison facility.
  • Partnering with us to expand the initiative.
